With the Empyrean, Malvern Panalytical has set the new standard for a multipurpose diffractometer. In developing the ultimate X-ray platform for the analysis of powders, thin films, nanomaterials and solid objects, the Malvern Panalytical R&D team has redesigned all key components of the X-ray diffractometer from the ground up.
It is Malvern Panalytical’s answer to the challenges of modern materials research, where the lifetime of a diffractometer is considerably longer than the horizon of any research project.
Now watch how Empyrean Product Manager at Malvern Panalytical Fabio Masiello, gives an overview of this diffractometer, its capabilities and the software application that is used with it.

Until recently reciprocal space map (RSM) measurements were considered too time-consuming for quick structural analysis of layered materials.
Now, ultra-fast reciprocal space mapping (URSM) is available in the new Data Collector (version 5.3). A URSM can be collected with any of Malvern Panalytical’s available 2D detectors, for instance, PIXcel3D, in acquisition times comparable to rocking curves without compromising data quality.
RSMs can reveal additional valuable information beyond that provided by single line scans such as commonly used for high-resolution rocking curves.
Watch how a URSM is collected in less than 30 seconds.
This video demonstrates the necessity and advantages of automatic combined control of temperature and relative humidity for Anton Paar CHC plus+ and MHC-trans humidity chambers, as well as a live demonstration of the complete 2D XRD experiment (from sample preparation, system configuration to data collection) monitoring phase transformations of trehalose using the CHC plus+ chamber.

Product manager Zhaohui Bao discusses the optics and extensions available for the Empyrean – the market-leading X-ray diffraction system from Malvern Panalytical. Among these extensions, Multicore Optics extends the Empyrean’s analytical capabilities without manual intervention – a gamechanger for users who require high-quality data across multiple application types automatically. Watch to learn more about this and the other beneficial features of Multicore Optics, including remote control, guided setup, and great industrial design.
Empyrean Floor Standing XRD
The intelligent diffractometer
Empyrean is the only platform that does it all, delivering the best data quality on every sample types. It covers the largest set of X-ray diffraction, scattering and imaging applications in one single instrument. Moreover, Empyrean not only meets the high expectations of scientists and XRD experts today, but will continue to do so as research themes evolve Empyrean is ideal for teaching purposes, thanks to the large doors that open completely, allowing access to the system to several people; but at the same time is perfect to perform measurements in demanding R&D environments in several industries
With the 3rd generation Empyrean, Malvern Panalytical has now redefined the concept of a multipurpose diffractometer: our newly designed MultiCore Optics enable the largest variety of measurements without any manual intervention. Empyrean has the unique ability to measure all sample types – from powders to thin films, from nanomaterials to solid objects – on a single instrument. The world of materials science is constantly changing and the life of a high performance diffractometer is much longer than the typical horizon of any research project. With Empyrean, you are ready for anything the future holds.
